Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder and is characterized by silence in certain situations, in certain places or towards certain people – despite having sufficient language skills and the physical ability to speak. In this course, the characteristics, causes and perpetuating factors are outlined. The practical section then presents specific recommendations for school support assistants when dealing with children and young people with selective mutism.
