Fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a congenital disability caused by alcohol consumption by the child's mother during pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome manifests itself in growth abnormalities, facial abnormalities and abnormalities of the central nervous system (e.g. a reduction in intelligence) – all of which are irreversible.
